a range from
embryonic research through adult ages. In keeping with the
Lions of Pennsylvania
interest on youth activities, special emphasis is encouraged
on research to
prevent deafness and hearing problems amoung our youth.
HISTORY
The Foundation was created by action of the 1978-79 State
Council. It was
incorporated as a non-profit corporation in August 1979. The
first board meeting
was held in January 1980. The Lions of Pennsylvania overwhelming
approved this
Foundation in a ballot vote at the May 1980 State Convention.
The Foundation
awarded its first research grants in July 1982 and continues
to award grants
annually each July.
HOW
FUNDS ARE RAISED
Funds are raised from the 33,000 Lions, Lioness and Leos from
MD14 of Pennsylvania.
Pennsylvania has 18 sub-districts. Each District Governor
appoints a Hearing Research
District Chairperson who is responsible for the collection
of contributions within the
district. All funds are forwarded to the Foundation treasurer
for depositing.
HOW
GRANTS ARE AWARDED
Researchers submit grant proposals to the Foundation to compete
for available research
fund. All proposals received are reviewed and critiqued by
the Medical Advisory Board
members comprised of (3) three out of state hearing professionals.
The Board of
Directors of the Foundation, using the critiques received
from the Advisory Board,
make the final decisions as to which proposals are to be funded
and in what amount.
The Board of the Foundation is comprised of (2) two Lions
from each of the (18) eighteen
sub-districts in Pennsylvania. All board members serve without
renumeration in keeping
with the Lions motto: "WE SERVE".
